What Is Social Media?
Social media is the interaction among people in which they create, share or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.
Social media differ from traditional or industrial media in many ways. This is including usability, immediacy, frequency, and performance. According to Nielsen, internet users continue to spend more time with social media sites than any other type of sites.
Social network sites are similar to many other genres of social media and online communities that support computer-mediated communication, but what defines this particular category of websites is the combination of features that allow individuals to (1) construct a public or semi-public profile within a bounded system, (2) articulate a list of other users with whom they share a connection, and (3) view and traverse their list of connections and those made by others within the system

This lecture was very interesting and useful. Students discussed this topic with professor and each other. They provided examples from the reading "Social Network Sites as Networked Publics: Affrodances, Dynamics, and Implications" by Danah Boyd. That was my favourite "practice" during the lecture. The reason I enjoyed it was that I could say my personal opinion about the reading, also I could get more experience and knowledge by listening to other students' opinions and thoughts.
Social media isn't something that you "do", instead you have to "be social"

"Tickle: Digital Marketing For Tech Companies"
Social media websites, such as Facebook or Skype, are good way to communicate with people that are far away from you. But only if that was it...
Using social media websites are fun but not safe. They collect (and probably sell) user data. Many people do not use social media for its original purpose anymore. They turn it in their business online shop (or photography, or commercial, etc). Some people even use social media sites to pretend being someone else (fake profiles). The reason of that could be absolutely anything: from being shy and unlucky person who wants attention to being silly and doing it for fun. Even friend lists are mostly full of random people instead of real friends (or people that person knows). What for? "Just to be famous"?

Introverts don't like small talk conversation, but they typically don't mind writing. The more people can "see" you on Facebook, Twitter, Google+, or a blog, the more they will feel like they know you, even though you don't have one-on-one interaction with them.

Rebecca provided students with reading "Social Network Sites as Networked Publics" (and picked this specific reading for her lecture) because in that reading Boyd talks about every aspect of social network sites. Students covered such sections as "Features of Social Network Sites", "Profiles", "Friend Lists", "Tools for Public Communications" and other.
Our social tools are not an improvement to modern society, they are a challenge to it

Here is a funny but meaningful YouTube video as an example of Facebook as a social network site.
A Facebook Update In Real Life by Extremely Decent
Social media is a huge part of our society these days. It changes our society (in a good or bad way - you decide). One of the examples is that people use social network sites such as LinkedIn, Facebook, or Twitter to find a job, or to hire employees. It is either applicants use social network sites to find a job, or employers are look up applicant's social profile to determine what kind of person he or she is (read more about social media and jobs HERE).
Profiles and public "walls" where people share their thoughts or videos tell quite a lot about personality. This could either help you with your new career, or completely destroy any chances to get that specific job (if you are an applicant).

Now you can also start and grow your own business using social network sites, such as Facebook.
It provides you with information, some resources, training, offering help to get you more money. What do they get back from you? Your money for training? Your credit card information? Your personal data?

Knowing one’s audience matters when trying to determine what is socially appropriate to say or what will be understood by those listening. In other words, audience is critical to context

"Social Network Sites as Networked Publics"
This video was made by Lee Daibler for the project. I picked this video because it describes impact of social media on our culture.
Another good video would be "Social Media Revolution" by Erik Qualman.

"The World's Best Thinkers on Social Media"
Social Media Today is an independent, online community for professionals in PR, marketing, advertising, or any other discipline where a thorough understanding of social media is mission-critical (website).
Social media topic connects to any possible topic you can think of. It covers very big area of topics and interests. An example will be Dr. Marsh uses social network to provide people with information about Hip-Hop Culture. People are probably creating online communities to talk about hip hop, share their thoughts and opinions. Dr. Gerhard could use (or already uses) social network sites to share his knowledge about Robots. Many other people could share their lectures, presentations, anything they want on social network sites.
Another example is social network sites are just perfect to share some Performance ("Homeland" for example) with entire world. Let's say the show is going to be in Australia. Without social media many people (I mean MANY) won't be able to see this show. Not even every person in Australia would be able to see it. And not many people use TV channels these days either (if you thought of TV where people can watch it). Main sources of world's (and local) news are probably YouTube and Facebook.
